5. Dr.G.N.Ramachandran- The Mastermind Behind the Ramachandran Plot

The intellect behind the triple helix model of collagen and the Ramachandran plot –Dr.G.N.Ramachandran is one of the least sung physicists of India. Excluding some minor details, this triple helix model transformed the space of structural biology and was published in the Nature in 1954 & 1955 across two landmark papers. On the other hand, the Ramachandran plot is highly beneficial in analyzing the structure of a protein for the confirmation of amino acids in it and close-contacts between the atoms, which was his succeeding research. The student of India’s most revered scientist Sir.C.V.Raman, Dr.Ramachandran was regarded as a scientist of Nobel Prize calibre by the world’s leading scientists Linus Pauling and Francis Crick. Holding innumerable contributions with an Indic approach in the realm of science, he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize but sadly did not get one. This maven of structural biology who put Madras on the map of Indian science and also contributed great volumes to the global science is unfortunately acknowledged only by a few people today.

This list of Indian scientists who are left unnoticed till today goes endless and it is our responsibility as Indian citizens to make them recognized by everyone while cherishing their inventions.
