Bengali-based organic chemist, Asima Chatterjee harbors a long-term research in the fields of organic chemistry and phytomedicine. Most of her noteworthy works were carried out under the guidance of the well-acclaimed instructors Prafulla Chandra Roy and Prof S.N. Bose. Being the first woman to receive Doctor of Science by an Indian university, she also played a prominent role in the development of cancer medicine (using vinca alkaloids), antimalarial drug and anti-epileptic medicine. Her prime goal was always to produce the best drugs from medicinal plants of the Indian subcontinent by probing the chemistry of disparate plant products. In the recent times, Asima is gaining recognition especially after Google celebrating her 100th birthday last year with a special doodle, a tribute to her workmanship.
