x86 to Take the Efficiency Crown

One of the biggest battles in the mobile space is in mobile architecture. Specifically, which architecture provides the best combination of performance and battery life. While ARM have dominated the smartphone scene, thanks to Qualcomm’s high end chips, x86 may be stealing back the lead.

Intel’s broadwell chips are more efficient than the ARM model of Haswell, and it delivers performance well above any high end ARM processor. Energy efficiency is a major strength of x86 and precuts like Core M are making a path for soon-to-be-released products like Cherry Trail. Now that Android has started supporting x86, most tablets are likely to adopt it.

Serious Tablet Sales Slowdown

The time of high tablet sales are over. A few years ago, everyone was saving up to buy on, but now that many people own a tablet and don’t plan to upgrade, sales will begin to drop off. Combined with the push for large screen smartphones and multimode laptops, tablets are in for a difficult time.

Battery Life Over Form Factor

A number of companies realized last year, that above all features, many consumers want a long battery life. A lot of super thin mobile phones were released last year, but expect their numbers to thin. With no new battery technology on the ground, the only way to guarantee better battery life is bigger batteries. So expect bigger phones with large batteries.
