Bangalore: The first netbooks based on Intel's dual-core Atom N550 have started shipping, announced Intel. Many PC makers like Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, MSI, Samsung and Toshiba will provide the extra speed soon.

Although all this models are yet unnamed, Acer has launched Aspire One D255 with the dual-core processor.

Intel conveys that the chips are suited for Flash video and other media, the areas where a single-core processor would need great effort to complete the task.

The N550 clocks in lower than most Atom chips, at 1.5GHz, but has twice as much cache. It also consumes almost the same amount of power as the single-core. Intel gives the new model the same DDR3 memory support as the newer single-core N455 and N475.

Many PC makers are expected to detail their netbooks soon.
