Swiggy restarts Genie in metros, long-distance deliveries still unavailable

Food delivery firm Swiggy has resumed its pick-up and drop-off service Genie in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, albeit only for short-distance deliveries from 7 am to 8 pm.

A week ago, ET broke the story that Genie had been halted in major cities due to a shortage of riders. The company cited the growing demand for food delivery services courtesy of the ongoing IPL and festive season as reasons for the decision.

"Swiggy Genie is temporarily unavailable in 3 out of the 68 cities [it operates in]. The cricketing and festive season has resulted in a surge in demand for servicing the requirements for both the food marketplace and Instamart, requiring us to prioritise these deliveries accordingly. We hope to resume Swiggy Genie in the impacted cities soon," a Swiggy spokesperson said last week.

Quick commerce players like Zepto and Instamart have been facing a shortage of riders as gig workers, struggling with high fuel prices and no pay hikes, have been shifting to ecommerce deliveries and riding bike taxis.
