Uttar Pradesh Leads Nation in GI-Tagged Products

Six more products from Uttar Pradesh have been bestowed with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, further enhancing the state's rich cultural and culinary heritage. Among these is the renowned 'Tirangi Barfi' of Kashi, a tricolored sweet that holds historical significance as it was sold by freedom fighters during the Quit India Movement.

The GI Registry granted certification to the 'Banaras Tirangi Barfi' along with five other Uttar Pradesh products. With these additions, Uttar Pradesh solidifies its position as the leading state in India with the most GI-tagged products, boasting a total of 75, while Tamil Nadu follows closely behind with 58 GI products.

Apart from the Tirangi Barfi, the newly certified products include Banaras Metal Casting Craft, Lakhimpur Kheri Tharu Embroidery, Bareilly Cane and Bamboo Craft, Bareilly Zardozi Craft, and Pilkhuwa Hand Block Print Textile.

Padma Shri Rajnikant, a prominent GI expert and General Secretary of the Human Welfare Association, highlighted the significance of these certifications, particularly praising the inclusion of the Tirangi Barfi and Metal Casting Craft from Varanasi. He emphasized the vital role played by organizations like the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow office, in supporting these endeavors.

Rajnikant underscored that these achievements not only recognize the cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh but also contribute to the economic empowerment of local artisans and producers. He noted that in 2008-09, the state had only one GI product, the 'Allahabad Surkha Amrood,' highlighting the remarkable progress made since then in securing GI tags for various products across different regions of the state and the country.
