BENGALURU: Czech auto giant Skoda has announced the launch of four new models in India which includes the company’s latest flagship the Skoda Kodiaq SUV and the Skoda Octavia vRS. For auto enthusiasts, the comeback of the Octavia vRS is particularly exciting, as it was the only performance-oriented sedan in its segment when launched almost ten years ago.

With Volkswagen’s 2.0 litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine churning 220bhp of raw power and 350Nm torque, the vRS is one mighty beast. The petrol model can accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 6.8 seconds. On the other hand, the diesel version comes with a 2.0 litre TDI engine that produces 184bhp of power and 380Nm torque. The diesel model hits 100kmph from naught in about 8.1 seconds which is quite a mouthwatering statistic for a diesel engine. Additionally, customers can choose from two gearbox options– 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG automatic.

Compared with a normal Octavia, the Octavia vRS looks more or less the same with a few sporty upgrades like larger wheels, trademark rear spoiler, aggressive front and rear bumpers and new all-black interiors. The European version has sporty bucket seats while the vRS badge further adds to its cool quotient. With its raw power and muscular looks, it is pretty sure that the Octavia vRS will give the Chevrolet Cruze, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Corolla Altis a run for their money.

However, it has been suggested that with the latest restrictions on diesel vehicles, Skoda may not launch the vRS diesel in India. Moreover, it is also expected that the vehicles’ power aspects will be heavily toned down when they will be launched in early 2017. The much hyped Skoda Laura vRS, introduced last year in India, had less power than its European counterpart and there are other examples as well. Considering the condition of Indian roads, you can’t complain about the carmakers doing so.
