JNU New Entrant to the List of Non-IIMs Accepting CAT Score

The Jawaharlal Nehru University recently announced that they will now accept the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) scores for admission into their postgraduate degree program of Masters of Business Administration (MBA). This MBA course is conducted by JNU’s School of Management and Entrepreneurship. This way, JNU has become a new entrant to the list of institutes that accept score of CAT but are non-IIMs. The Vice Chairman of JNU, Mamidala Jagdish Kumar confirmed this news with a tweet stating that this process will start from the July 2019 sessions. This will mark as a huge step for the MBA programme for the Institute. The news has also been confirmed by ChintamaniMahapatra who is the Rector of JNU.

JNU is one of the top public universities which is located in Delhi and offers many undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses to students from all over the country. It has been ranked first among the top five universities in the country for continuously two years. Ministry of Human Resources has been granting this title to the University for the past 2 years. JNU has granted recognition and accreditation to many defense institutions and research and development institutions across the country.

CAT is an entry-level examination conducted by IIMs to allow students to gain admission into MBA and related postgraduate management courses like PGP, PGDM, PGPEM, PGPEX, PGPBM, and EPGP in the different IIMs as well as many other non-IIMs. The official notification for CAT 2018 has been released recently. According to this notification, the online registration for this examination will start from August 8, 2018.

The process will go on for more than a month and will end on September 19. The exam will be conducted on November 25, 2018, across many centres in the country. It will be conducted in 147 cities in two sessions where each session will have a different question paper. A normalization process is followed along with the scaling of scores to ensure that the candidates do not face any disadvantages because of discrepancies in the different questions in the two question papers. The scores of these exams are accepted by IIMs and many famous B-schools. The admit cards for the candidates will be released on October 24, 2018. The candidates can then download their admit cards from the official website of the examination after this date. The official website is iimcat.ac.in.

CAT is online, that is a computer-based test. The question papers are divided into three sections namely Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. The examination is of 3 hours that is 180 minutes which gives the candidates 60 minutes for each of these sections. The candidates are not allowed to switch sections while answering the questions for one particular section during the test. These sections in the question paper altogether have 100 questions which give the candidates a little more than half a minute to solve each question. The results of this examination are announced around December or January every year and are released in the form of percentile.

After the announcement of results, all the IIMs and the other non-IIMs which accept CAT scores declare their selection criteria. These selection criteria are different for different institutes and they also have different procedures. All of this is based on the CAT scores of the candidates. Every student, who wishes to apply to a particular institute or many institutes, needs to apply to these colleges separately after qualifying the CAT exam. Next year onwards, JNU will also declare the criteria and procedure it has set for the qualifying candidate to apply for admission into the institutes.
