I dream of an India that is prosperous, strong and caring. An India, that reigns a place of honor in the comity of great nations. The dreamer of this golden India was no one else but Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a man of great honor who redefined political governance during his reign. Unforgettable is his Shakti series of nuclear tests, inspiring poems and powerful political career that gives us all strong reasons to call him the ‘Bhishma Pitamah of Indian Politics’. The BJP stalwart breathed his last at the age of 93 at 5:05 pm on August 16th, 2018 (Thursday). Though former prime minister was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition for over two months, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) reports state that his condition continued to remain critical since the last two days.

Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s demise is a loss to the nation, especially for the political fraternity. Elected as India’s prime minister thrice, he chiseled nation’s epithet in multiple historic events and made India proud beyond boundaries. Stepping in the political arena back in 1942, Vajpayee gained his first exposure during the Quit India Movement. However, in 1951, the veteran was appointed a national secretary of free India’s newly formed Bharatiya Jana Sangh wherein he exhibited utmost dedication towards the political system. Impressed by his superlative oratory skills, the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru predicted that he would someday become India’s Prime Minister.

A Man with No Enemies

Another golden moment in India’s history was when Late Vajpayee was appointed the Minister of External Affairs in 1977 and became the first person to deliver a speech in United Nations General Assembly in Hindi. Within a couple of years, he established himself as an adept statesman and honorable political leader.  Not once or twice, but thrice was he appointed the Prime Minister of Independent India on the timeline of 1996, 1998-99 and 1999-2004. Within his reign, Vajpayee conducted five underground nuclear tests in Pokhran. Though many international sanctions tried endorsing these nuclear tests through foreign investment, Vajpayee’s steady rejections paved wider ways for domestic testing, making India a strong Nuclear Weapon state. All thanks to his intellectual experience and undying nationalism.

We also witnessed Late Vajpayee’s intense contribution in the Lahore summit and Kargil War. While in the former conclave he initiated a new peace process with Pakistan through the historic inauguration of Delhi-Lahore Bus and consequently eased the tensed situations between the two nations with mutual camaraderie and esprit de corps. However during the latter stitch, the respected leader played smart tactics to curtail military tension by partnering with United States and writing a ‘secret letter’ to then US President Bill Clinton stating – ‘we will get them out, one way or the other’ that directly indicated that he did not rule or used nuclear weapons by crossing Line of Control (LoC). And the result was clearly, Pakistan’s heavy losses with US and China army withholding their military support. No wonder, the victory is designated to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s quality leadership!

An Intellectual Soul

Besides being a political trailblazer, Padma Vibhushan Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a well-renowned, experienced writer. Editor of two monthlies – Rashtradharma & Panchjanya and two news dailies – Swadesh & Veer Arjun, he gave lingual vocal to multiple books and poems including National Integration, Rajaniti ki Rapatili Rahem, Decisive Days, Sakti Se Santi, Meri Ikyavana Kavitaem, Sreshtha Kabita, Nayi Disha, Samvedna, Twenty-One Poems and many more.

A reputed prime minister, dexterous leader, skilled orator, adept pragmatist, impressive writer, inspirational chairman and a proud Indian, Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee will always remain the best exemplar of sharp politics with a gentle portrayal of wisdom.
