3. Randle McMurphy - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

Cast: Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson’s first Oscar-winning performance (out of three), Randle McMurphy - a wild American of Irish descent with an anti-authoritarian attitude. Having sentenced with several ‘un-heroic’ charges, McMurphy is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable, motivated predominantly by self-interest, feigning insanity to escape from labor duties in prison. He fills the insanely calm hospital setting as well as our hearts with his confident and raucous laughter, but only to meet the ridiculous reality of the hospital and symbolically embrace his role as a martyr for the patients. McMurphy’s million dollar laughs open a bag of mixed feelings.

4. Calvin Clifford Baxter - The Apartment (1960)

Cast: Jack Lemmon

Baxter is a synonym of ‘insanely innocent’. The story revolves around Baxter’s hopes of moving up the corporate ladder in an insurance company, and him finally culminating in providing his apartment to a handful of company executives for their personal use. Though benefits him promotions, he often finds himself in trouble with this ‘lending act’. When Baxter falls in love, the context gets thicker, giving enough room for Jack Lemmon to conquer the heart of his audience. With his unique style of acting and screen presence that boasts of stage acting background, he shreds a winter of emotions and mannerisms, which brought him ‘Best Actor’ nomination in the 33rd Academy Awards (1961). Jack lost his second Oscar to Burt Lancaster, probably on a photo finish!
