#7 TechStep

Time Span: 1991 - 1993

CPU class: Motorola 68HC11

OS: TechStep OS

Development status: Closed

Platform size: 1

A surprise entrant to feature the list, the TechStep is a little-known diagnostic tool, which allowed technicians to troubleshoot problems associated with Mac systems. It’s still believed that this troubleshooting tool was Apple’s first step into the handheld mobile computing platform. The interesting part of this device was that it ran itself on embedded computer software.

#8 Newton

Time Span: 1993 - 1998

CPU class: ARM

OS: Newton OS

Development status: Open

Platform size: 7

The Newton was Apple’s first entrant into the PDA market. Though it sometimes had a bit of inaccuracy in its handwriting recognition system, the Newton embraced a relatively new OS and was wide open for third-party developers. But the product never reached a broader customer base.
