Whether you have family that lives in India, or you need to send business supplies over to a neighbouring office, there are several reasons behind why people may decide to send a parcel to India. As Asian countries are renowned for having strict laws and regulations however, many people are unsure on whether or not they can send their parcel to India. Regardless of whether you opt for a small or large parcel courier, the chances are your parcel will be accepted by customs, but there are some rules that you’ll need to abide by.

Custom Requirements

When importing goods into India, there are a few strict custom requirements that must be met without fail. Regardless of whether the shipment contains letters, documents or is a non-document shipment, all packages need to come equipped with a valid air waybill. This should be scanned in IDIS along with the customs invoice and any other document that the shipper has enclosed with the parcel. The air waybill is a mandatory document for the process and release of the shipment, so your parcel delivery won’t be going very far without one.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Wherever you decide to send your parcel across the world, there will always be restricted or prohibited items that you must refrain from sending. Sending a parcel into a country that breaches their restricted or prohibited items policy will only result in additional fees and delivery delays, so it’s always best to avoid them. In India, there are a few key prohibited and restricted items that you need to be aware of, and they include:

Prohibited

Restricted

Pornographic & obscene material

Used Electronics

Ivory

Second Hand Goods

Maps & literature where Indian external boundaries have been shown incorrectly

Medicine, regardless of quantity

As you can see, there are a few items that you may not have expected to appear on the list, so it’s always worth checking the customs website before sending anything to India.

Things To Know About Sending Gifts

So, if your Indian relative has a birthday coming up, you might want to send them a gift to show you’re thinking of them. However, there are multiple things to be aware of when sending a gift to India. When you decide to send a gift abroad, your package may be subject to gift exemptions, which have the potential to reduce to total amount of duty and tax that’s applied to your parcel. When shipping gifts to India, it’s useful to know that you can only ship 10 samples of the same item per shipment.

Important Documentations

Importing a package into India requires several pieces of paperwork to be sent along with it. First of all, you will need to provide customs with a CITES Certificate, and ensure that this is forwarded by Express service. Furthermore, you must provide documents Know Your Customer (KYC) and authorisation Power of Attorney (POA) as per customs requirements prior to the clearance stage – this is mandatory for non-document deliveries. Furthermore, a packing list must be included for multiple package shipments.

Overall, India’s delivery depot isn’t as strict as people would believe. While there are rules that you must abide by for your parcel to pass clearance, these documents aren’t overly complex, allowing you to send a parcel to India with ease.
