Like me, most people probably regret how much time they spend indoors. But because we spend on average 7-9 hours working in our offices we do not normally have a choice.

One of the things you might miss most is looking at natural beauty and enjoying all the plants and greenery outside. So why not bring a little green and color into your office?

That is where office plants and indoor plants come in. Putting a plant in your office can be a very good way to brighten up your office and improve its whole atmosphere.

Here are some reasons to love office plants:

•    Office plants can boost you and your colleagues’ creativity.

•    Studies have shown that office plants can significantly reduce your stress.

However, like most choices in life here are some things you need to consider if you want to buy yourself an office plant.

Light levels

Always keep in mind that your plants are living organisms so you need to make sure that you provide them with everything they need to survive. One of the most important of these is to make sure that your plants can get a suitable level of light.

This can be a tricky one to fulfill as we often cannot really change the levels of light in our office so you probably need to buy a plant that will be able to adapt to your specific office. Luckily different plants require different levels of light so just make sure you choose a suitable one.

Maintenance

There are also other aspects to keep in mind. Plants also usually require a certain degree of maintenance. This involves watering them, giving them special plant food or fertilizer and trimming withered or excessive leaves and branches. Some plants require almost daily maintenance so you need to pick a plant that will fit your schedule and which you will be able to spend enough time on.

When picking an office plant you should also think about allergies. Allergy or sensitivity to plants and pollen is relatively common.

You need to pay special attention to this if you share an office with other people and if your office doesn’t have very good ventilation.

Before you buy a plant test to see how it affects you and also ask your colleagues. Luckily there are many plants that do not affect people with allergies as much, so just do some research beforehand.

The pot

Although many plants come planted in pots that you can use as is, others do not. Make sure that the pot that your plant comes in is suitable others you may need to replant it.

You should make sure that the pot you choose offers good enough drainage for the plant. Look out for pots that stand on a base into which extra water can drain into without making a mess on your desk. Especially if you are going to put the plant on your desk or another piece of furniture, look for a pot that is not too heavy.

When you are buying a pot and plant shop around as you will definitely be able to find one that complements your office’s style or décor scheme.

One of the most important things that you have to keep in mind is where you want to place the plant. Many of the points discussed above boil down to this. The most common places to put an office plant will probably be somewhere on the floor, on a shelf, on a table or on your desk.

As has been mentioned before if you want to place them on a piece of furniture or desk you also need to be share that it can hold the weight. Depending on where you put it, you need to consider what size will work. Because we do not usually have that much space in our offices and homes, indoor plants are usually relatively small and compact.

You probably want to put the plant somewhere where it doesn’t get in the way and you can’t accidentally knock it over. Importantly, you should place the plant in a spot where you can see it!

If you have open wall space you can also consider buying a hanging plant or buying a pot that can be mounted on a wall. A great option in terms of this, is also air plants which are plants whose roots do not have to be planted in soil.

Most of us, however, will probably want a plant that can be placed on our desks. This is where you spend most of your time and is also a place where it probably won’t get into anybody else’s way.

There are many plants that can work well as office plants but some plants are just more suitable for living indoors than others.

Here are some of the plants that work especially well on your office desk:

1. Small succulents. These plants are very low maintenance and come in very interesting shapes and sizes such as Echeveria which is shaped in a rose like pattern. If and when they do bloom the flowers are often especially bright and attractive.

2. Bonsais are another good option. You can also find them in several tree species. These tiny trees, however, can be pretty expensive depending on which tree you bought and how old it is. They also require more maintenance and even pruning.

3. Many people love to have lilies as indoor plants. Their leaves are usually a very rich green and they also have very striking flowers. They can have wonderful fragrances as well. A word of caution though, lilies are often considered to be one of the worst plants for allergy sufferers and people who often get hay fever.

4. Another favorite type office plant is the orchid. Orchids, when they are blooming, are also particularly striking and will certainly make an impression. However, they can be very tricky to maintain and to keep healthy. So before you pick an orchid it will be best to do some research on how to care for them.

5. When you are looking for a plant also remember that there are many beautiful plants that are non-flowering such as snake plants. Snake plants are relatively inexpensive. They are also evergreens so remain attractive throughout the year. It has also been claimed that they can improve the air quality in a room.

6. Another option to consider are artificial plants. They can be especially useful if you are afraid that you won’t always be there to take care of the plant, you have allergies or if there just isn’t enough light in your office. Artificial plants look more and more realistic and there are beautiful options. You can find artificial plants that mimic almost any plant.

I must admit that for me, shopping for plants is just as much fun and as relaxing as actually having an office plant. So I would recommend taking your time when going to pick your plant so that you can fully enjoy the experience. Few things can beat a morning trip to your local garden center.
