Bangalore: India is all set to have its first Military University. Next month Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone for the country’s first national defence university. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Defence Minister A K Antony, reported N C Bipindra for The New Indian Express.

The Indian National Defence University (INDU) would be a fully autonomous institute, at Binola near Gurgoan in the national capital.

Defence Ministry officials said “Decks have now been cleared for the foundation stone laying of the Indian National Defence University. The final touches to the plan were given at a meeting presided over by the Defence Minister,” as reported by The New Indian Express.

They also said “The University is being planned on the lines of IITs and IIMs.”

The university would have an authorization to provide knowledge-based higher education for management of defence of the nation, along with emerging security challenges through academic research and training.

It was also noted that the government would incur an expenditure of Rs.295 crore for setting up the university and Rs.162 crore for land acquisition. From the day of laying the foundation stone about seven years is estimated for the institute to be functional.

Approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2010, the INDU would accommodate a great number of international officials and students as well as India’s security leaders, civilians and defence officials for training and courses.
