2. Check you statements closely

Keep a close eye out for unexpected charges on your financial statements. Even a one rupee charge could be a sign that a thief has your account number and is testing to see if you notice anything unexpected. If you spot any unauthorized purchases, a call to the credit card company will start an investigation and the questionable purchases will be reversed under most circumstances. Companies also will issue new account numbers upon request.

If you don't receive your statement on time, that may be a red flag that something isn't right. One popular tactic with thieves is changing the billing address on existing accounts to delay their detection.

3. Cooperate with your card issuer

It's likely that you will get transferred to your credit card company's fraud department once your card information is hacked. There are chances that you will be asked a series of questions, such as whether your card has been out of your possession and exactly which charges were unauthorized.

Most consumers often don’t know how their account information was compromised. But tell your card issuer if you have any specific suspicions if not, don't worry about it. Banks and Visa and MasterCard have very sophisticated systems nowadays in order to try to identify the point of compromise.
