Sensex falls 118 points; Wipro, BHEL slump

Mumbai: A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was trading 118 points down in the afternoon session Wednesday on selling pressure in IT, realty and metal stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,610.71 points, was ruling at 19,426.91 points at around 1.45 p.m., down 0.61 percent or 118.44 points from its previous close at 19,545.35 points.

At the National Stock Exchange, the 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty was trading at 5842.55 points, down 0.44 percent or 25.85 points.

Wipro slumped 3.18 percent at Rs.449.25 after disclosing its fourth quarter financial statements. The country's third largest outsourcing firm has posted Rs.1,375 crore net profit for the fourth quarter of 2010-11, up 14 percent from the corresponding quarter of previous year.

Other major losers on the Sensex were: BHEL, down 2.30 percent at Rs.2,020; Jaiprakash Associates, down 1.90 percent at Rs.97.85; and DLF, down 1.59 percent at Rs.234.60.

Most sectoral indices were also in the red with the realty index falling 1.52 percent and the consumer goods index down over one percent. Broader market indices were flat.
