BANGALORE: Acid attack victims can breathe a sigh of relief as the NGO ‘Acid Survivors Foundation of India’ may now collaborate with the government to come up with a comprehensive insurance policy that covers the medical treatment for such victims, reports Tanvi Ramkrishnan of The Times of India.

Furthermore, a psycho-social-cum-burn rehabilitation centre is being set up by the organization to provide care for the victims.

Rahul Varma, CEO and Managing Director of Acid Survivors Foundation, Kolkata, exclaimed “Given the speed with which the current government is passing proposals, we are very hopeful of getting the insurance cover for these victims by the end of this year."

The Foundation has identified nearly 500 acid attack survivors in India, out of which Maharashtra alone has seen around 35 cases of acid attacks, of which 25 have been registered in Mumbai alone in the past three years, and 18 from Gujarat region.

The recent attack of two women from the outskirts of Mumbai, were the latest victims of acid attack.
