4. France Official gold holdings: 2,435.4 tonnes Percent of foreign reserves in gold: 69.5 percent


Under the Central Bank Gold Agreement 2, France sold 572 tonnes of gold. In late 2004, France moved 17 tonnes of gold to the Bank of International Settlements as a piece of purchase of BIS shares. The French National Bank, Banque De France, is habitat to the country’s large gold holdings, which comprise 60.5 percent of its foreign reserves.


3. Italy  Official gold holdings: 2,451.8 tonnes Percent of foreign reserves in gold: 71.3 percent


Italy comprises the third largest gold reserve in the world with official gold holdings of 2, 451.8 tonnes. These holdings are worth approximately around $89.92 billion and account for 71.3 percent of the country’s foreign reserves. Under the Central Bank Gold Agreement 1 and 2, Italy sold no gold and also announced that it will sell no gold under the CBGA 3 too.
